Goldwater Zell Waiheke Island Chardonnay 2006 |
| Produced By
Goldwater Estate |
| Wine Description |
|
Extremely bright and intense aromas of ripe Nectarine and peach supported by toasty oak and mealy barrel fermentation characters. A velvety and weighty texture, with Nectarine, caramel and ginger flavours, balanced with fine acidity giving a long and intense finish. The Zell Chardonnay has become a highly sought after wine, well known for its elegance and ability to age. |
| Winemakers Notes |
|
The fruit was hand picked and whole bunch pressed with barrel fermentation using natural yeasts. Raised in French oak (30% new) on yeast lees with partial malo-lactic and battonage for eight months. |
| Viticulture Notes |
|
The season began with a great spring at the time of the Chardonnay flowering giving us an even fruit set on well balanced vines. We then increased concentration by thinning out any slower ripening bunches. This helped produce a very elegant, ripe style of wine unique to the single vineyard in which it was grown |
| Cellaring |
|
Drinking beautifully now but will cellar well for up to 4 to 5 years. |
| Food Match |
|
Fish, white meats, pasta. |

| THE chardonnay of this tasting and a fine example of a wine that is ageing beautifully. It has an excellent flinty nose with a fresh, lively palate where the fruit is seamlessly integrated with the oak. The finish is dry, persistent and complex. |

| Reviews |
Metro Magazine - (Kerry Tyack) The Zell has been a stalwart of the Goldwater range for a number of vintages, and the just released 2005 is an impressively complex wine with lovely richness. | Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to NZ Wines - (Michael Cooper) Grown in the hillside, clay-based Zell vineyard on Waiheke Island, this is a rich, complex wine with the ripeness and roundness typical of northern Chardonnays. It is hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and fully fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak casks (30 to 40 per cent new), with partial malolactic fermentation. The 2005 vintage (****) is a complex wine, still unfolding, with grapefruit and peach flavours, strong, fresh and lively, and well-integrated, toasty oak | |
