Wine Description
Medium density red in colour, with aromas of cherries, spice, white pepper and a very subtle hint of oak chare. The palate is soft and varietal, with primary fruit dominating, balanced nicely with soft tannins making it a style very approachable in its youth.
Winemakers Notes
The Syrah was fermented in open top fermenters, maintaining cool temperatures throughout to ensure the retention of primary fruit aromas. Post fermentation the wine had a short post fermentation maceration on skins before being pressed and transferred to oak barrels for maturation. During this 16 months in French oak the wines were racked several times in preparation for blending prior to bottling.
Viticulture Notes
The Syrah fruit used to produce this wine was harvested from the Matheson Vineyard in the Hawkes Bay region on the East Coast of the North Island. This region is renowned for the production of full-bodied red wines and is recognised as one of the warmest viticultural regions in New Zealand.

The Matheson Vineyard has gravely distinctive red metal soils that contribute to the development of exceptional varietal flavour. The vines are trained to two cane vertical shoot position canopy, and in combination with the lean soil of the vineyard produce a low yielding crop. This exposed the grape clusters to sunlight, assisting with development of colour and flavours as well as allowing the free flow of air through the vine.

This wine has the potential to be cellared for two to five years.

The wine matches perfectly with venison casserole and wild mushrooms.
