Tasting Notes
This rich velvety and deeply coloured red has lifted aromas of ripe blackcurrant and plums, with hints of cashew nuts, spicy cloves and leather. On the palate, intense brambly blackberry and plum flavours and leather and cigar box notes integrate with supple tannins, giving it generous length that finishes soft and dry.

Richly satisfying, it is already delicious and has magnificent aging potential.
Winemakers Notes
They were handpicked on April 20th 2006 at ideal flavour profile and ripeness of 24.5° brix, destemmed, then cold soaked for 5 days prior to fermentation. A selected yeast was innoculated to the must in an open-top fermenter and plunged twice daily throughout ferment.

After ferment the wine underwent four weeks extended maceration before being pressed to barrel for 16 months ageing in quality French oak (52% new and 48% 1-year old) with 3 rackings throughout. Bottling was undertaken on November 30th 2007.

This opulent Merlot is a testament to our estate-grown Mere Rd grapes in the renowned Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay.

Lovely rich. dense fruit aromas that are almost port-like pave the way for savoury fruit flavours allied to dry, dry tannins. Some more ageing should see these soften and some wonderful come through. One for the cellar.
