Thornbury Gisborne Chardonnay 2007 |
| Produced By
Thornbury Wines |
| Wine Description |
|
This Chardonnay displays characteristics of citrus blossom and mandarin. The palate shows a rich creamy mouthfeel with added complexity from integrated elegant oak flavours. This is a rich, flavorsome wine balanced by natural acidity and finishing with a refined minerality. The wine is approachable now but will reward cellaring in the short to medium term. |
| Winemakers Notes |
|
Chardonnay grapes were hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. This provided gentle extraction of the free run juice. The wine was fermented in 50% new French barriques. 70% of the blend was fermented using a variety of commercial yeast strains and 30% using indigenous yeast to provide elegance and complexity. A portion of the wine went through full malolactic fermentation to balance the acidity and provide richness to the wine. Matured for ten months in barrel before blending, the wine was regularly lees stirred in barrel to provide texture and mouthfeel. Following blending the wine was stabilised, fined and filtered to bottle. |
| Viticulture Notes |
|
Gisborne experienced warm dry weather during summer and harvest resulting in optimum maturity with excellent quality. Ideal growing conditions during these months resulted in yields marginally up on expectations. The fruit for this wine is a blend of Thornbury’s Katoa and McDiarmid Hill Vineyards plus a small percentage from the Wakelin vineyard in Gisborne’s Patutahi plateau region. The Katoa vineyard is situated near Manutuke, tucked high in the Taurau Valley, one of the warmest and driest parts of Gisborne. The Clone 95 Chardonnay is planted on a sheltered, north- facing slope. The McDiarmid Hill, Mendoza cloned vineyard is situated in the slightly cooler Patutahi region on a north sloping ridge. These conditions, along with the typical clay-loam soils of the Gisborne area, provide free drainage and optimal conditions for ripening Chardonnay. Managed similarly, these vineyards are cane pruned, shoot thinned and leaf plucked to ensure flavour development and healthy fruit. |
