Lawson's Dry Hills Pinot Gris 2007 |
| Produced By
Lawson's Dry Hills Wines Ltd |
| Wine Description |
|
Off dry in style this gorgeous wine has all the characters that show Pinot Gris varietal definition at its most impressive. Lifted aromas of baked pears and cinnamon are matched with candied orange peel and quince flavours. This full bodied wine has a rich texture, showing the benefits of ripe low yielding grapes, barrel fermentation(20% in French oak barriques) and extensive lees stirring. |
| Tasting Notes |
|
Off dry and full bodied in style this wine is unmistakably Pinot Gris, with pear, orange, subtle vanilla and cinnamon aromas. While the palate is bursting with fruit flavour, texture is the key with a lovely rich mouthfeel and fine balance in terms of sugar and acid. The complex array of flavours including baked pear, quince, candied peel and cream combine with a lingering spiciness on the finish. |
| Winemakers Notes |
|
Our approach was to showcase the excellent fruit we received by using simple winemaking techniques to highlight the flavours and texture of the wine. Cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 80% of the blend with a yeast isolated from Alsace was used to preserve the varietal fruit characters, whilst the remaining 20% was fermented in older French oak barriques to build palate weight and flavour complexity. Both the components received extensive lees stirring to enhance the wines natural creamy texture and mouthfeel. |
| Viticulture Notes |
|
The grapes for this wine were sourced predominantly from the Barnsley vineyard in the Waihopai valley, with the balance coming from our own Chaytors Road vineyard. The fruit ripened quite slowly with flavours developing before the sugar levels became excessive This meant that the grapes had a longer hang time and allowed us to make a wine with lower alcohol levels than in previous years. Very low crop levels(under 2.5 tons/acre) gave the grapes wonderful concentrated flavours and us the basis for a really special wine. |

| One of the best Pinot Gris that we have tasted this year at TiZwine. It has an elegant floral nose with nuances of lychees and pear drop. The flavours are big and bold, jammed full of ripe and juicy fruit whilst the texture is velvety. Great on its own but will also a food wine. |

Living Magazine NZ - (John Hawkesby) A Marlborough producer of renown. Full bodied, off-dry style with lots of fruit - the usual suspects...pear, orange, vanilla and cinnamon. Lovely quince, candied pear and spicy finish, GOOD VALUE. | Northern Advocate - (Graeme Barrow) Pear, cinnamon and quince bouquet, pear and apple flavours, good texture and concentration, dry and seductive, forward and accessible with soft, balancing acidity. A lovely wine to drink | Otago Daily Times - (Charmian Smith) Typical of the fruit-bomb style of Pinot Gris, oozing stone, pip and tropical fruits, suggesting pawpaw and mango. Rich and mouth filling, with a pleasant slightly oil texture and a suggestion of nuttiness. | The Press (Christchurch) - (Kate Fraser) An aromatic wine with weight, this is an impressive Marlborough Pinot Gris. Layers of flavours - candied citrus to distinctive ripe pear notes, even a flicker of spice. A weighty palate - 14% alcohol - an appealing off-dry style. | TiZwine.com Tasting - (Tasting Panel) Top Tip - Exceptional quality. | Winestate Magazine - (Tasting Panel) FOUR AND A HALF STARS - TOP IN CATEGORY. Floral, medium style with lush, strongly varietal flavours of pears, citrus fruits and spices. Finely balanced, sweet-fruited and rich. | |
