Wine Description
The colour is deep and vibrant. The wine shows the black pepper with lifted raspberry and Turkish Delight flavours. The palate has good structure with fine sweet tannins and long finish with hints of cedar and spice. There is real complexity resulting from vine age that gives this wines its ethereal quality.
Winemakers Notes
The fermentation was conducted on the skins, at a peak temperature of 30o C and after fermentation the wine was left to macerate a further 10 days. After maceration it was run off to French oak barriques. There have been three rackings since the wine has been in barrel. A selection from the best barrels (65% new) that were mainly Taransaud (89%) barrels, many from the historic and venerable Troncais forest, was made and the selection lightly fined with egg whites, before filtration and bottling.
Viticulture Notes
This wine is made from selected hand harvested grapes grown on our Gimblett Road vineyard in the heart of the Gimblett Gravels. The soils here are amongst the most stony on the “gravels”. The crop load was limited to 2.5 kilos per vine through spring shoot thinning and summer bunch thinning. The block was planted in 1994, and this vine age has made a real contribution to the complexity and finesse of the wine from this year’s vintage.
