Innovator Syrah
Tasting Notes
This wine has been produced from grapes grown in the Hawkes Bay region on the East coast of New Zealand. This region is regarded as the warmest region in New Zealand and has low to moderate rainfall. The soils in this block of fruit are from the famous red metal loams that contain some stones and gravel and have a distinctive red colour.

These vines were pruned each year to a 30 bud per vine cane and are shoot thinned in the spring to open the vine to sunlight and free air flow. Crop levels are thinned to maintain a cropping level of three tonnes per acre on a traditional vertical shoot positioning trellis system.
Winemakers Notes
A supple and generous Syrah with stewed plum and soft blackberry flavours. Together with spicy oak flavours make a soft and rich wine style with a silky tannin finish.
Viticulture Notes
The grapes were mechanically harvested, crushed and destemmed, then cold macerated at five degrees centigrade for three days before the initiation of fermentation with a selected yeast culture. This process extracts an extra dimension of flavour, colour and tannins prior to fermentation. Fermentation was undertaken in stainless steel tanks that were hand plunged twice daily. At the completion of fermentation the tanks were sealed and a further period of maceration on skins for six days was used to further enhance tannin structure. The must was then pressed and pumped to oak barriques, consisting of 60% new French and American oak, and the remainder a mixture of one and two year old seasoned barrels.
Cellaring
A very enjoyable wine that is suitable for immediate consumption. However, with appropriate cellaring will continue to develop more mature characters through to 2010
Food Match
This wine is ideally matched with a roast of hogget stuffed with diced bacon, dried apricots, onion and hazelnuts.
