Wine Description
Syrah from the Hawkes Bay
Tasting Notes
Produced from grapes grown in the Hawkes Bay region, situated on the East Coast of the North Island in New Zealand. Hawkes Bay is the warmest grape growing region in New Zealand, and has a low to moderate rainfall. The soil these grapes were grown in are termed red metal loams that contain stone and gravel with distinctive red colouring, which contributes to the concentrated grape flavours around the region. The vines are trained to two canes and are shoot thinned in the spring to control crop levels. The fruit band has leaves removed at veraison to expose the fruit to airflow and sunlight ensuring full flavour and colour development. The 2004 vintage was a long dry season with warm temperatures.
Winemakers Notes
A youthful syrah style exhibiting nuances of herb, plum and rhubarb in both the aroma and flavour profile. The palate is soft with fine tannins finishing with a hint of white pepper.
Viticulture Notes
The fruit was mechanically harvested in premium condition then crushed and destemmed into stainless steel tanks, where it was chilled to five degrees centigrade and underwent a 45 hour period of maceration to extract colour, tannins and flavour prior to fermentation. The fruit was then returned to ambient temperature and allowed to ferment with natural yeast. The fermentation was conducted in four tonne open top fermenters and hand plunged twice daily. At the completion of fermentation a further period of maceration enhanced the tannin and flavour structure. After pressing, the wine was transferred to a mix of oak barriques, one third new and two-thirds seasoned oak.
Cellaring
Although suitable for early consumption, this will develop more mature characters through to 2010.
Food Match
The wine matches perfectly with venison casserole and wild mushrooms.
